How To Make Money From iPhone Games

Last year, a small Mac game developer called Pangea Software ported one of its titles to Apple’s iPhone. Pangea’s Brian Greenstone didn’t expect to make much from the iPhone version of its arcade-style game Enigmo; he expected that the company might sell 10,000-20,000 units over its lifetime. It sold that amount in a single day, and from July 2008 to January 2009, it sold a total of 810,000 copies, earning a profit of $1.5 million, even after Apple took its 30 percent cut.

Numbers like that help explain the burst of iPhone game/entertainment news here at SXSW 2009, from location-aware fun apps to the Facebook Connect function linking iPhone apps to the social network. But there are also challenges. Those were analyzed at a Saturday SXSW panel featuring Greenstone and three other successful iPhone developers; here are my five favorite takeaways.

Think Handheld Game Console, Not Mobile Platform

Moderator Raven Zachary laid out the playing field: On the market, there are now 17.4 million iPhones and an estimated 9 million iPods (which also run the iPhone OS.) There are 27,000 iPhone apps that have been downloaded a half-billion times; 1 in 3 are games or entertainment apps. While it’s not the most popular phone on the market, it’s easily the most Net-centric, accounting for nearly 70 percent of all mobile-based web usage.

Rihanna Covers Women's Fitness UK May 2012

Rihanna Covers Women's Fitness UK May 2012

She's gearing up for her acting debut when "Battleship" hits theaters on May 18th and, as part of her promotions, Rihanna took over the cover of the May 2012 issue of Women's Fitness UK.

The 24-year-old "We Found Love" singer brought her hotness to the magazine's front page in a black ASOS jersey maxi beach dress while opening up about topics including her fondness of water, love of microwave popcorn and decision to start small when it comes to trying her luck as an actress.

Highlights from Rihanna's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Women's Fitness UK!

On sticking with her guns:
"I stand up for what I believe in, and a lot of the time that can be against people's opinion, but that's the hard thing to do, it really is sometimes. Especially if the majority doesn't agree."

On her mother's strength:
"My mom is the toughest woman I know. I'm finding myself becoming a lot more like her. Every time I come to a crossroads, I always find myself going back to my mom's methods."

On her fondness of the water:
"Growing up in Barbados I did a lot of swimming, and I spent a lot of time in the ocean with my dad. I love the ocean, so swimming was one of the fun parts of the movie."

On her favorite food (at the moment):
"My favorite food right now is microwave butter popcorn. And when I'm in London I'm close to authentic Jamaican food, so I tend to eat that every day."

On starting slow when it comes to acting:
"I wanted to start small, somewhere it could be a learning experience. I didn't want it to be surfaced at all. And now I'm looking forward to seeing what I do next."

J. Cole - Work Out

Ibiza & Club PACHA

Fedde Le Grand, Deniz Koyu & Johan Wedel – Turn It

Comfortably poised as one of Holland’s most prolific Electronic artists to date, Fedde Le Grand has remained well and truly at large where House music is concerned. Already established as key players on the international circuit, Sweden’s Johan Wedel and German producer Deniz Koyu, donning a noteworthy amount of steam to this forthcoming Flamingo release, have seen a positive influx of attention from the international House scene, using their hard-hitting remode of James Blunt’s ‘Dangerous‘ as a positive nod towards the diverse potential of their collaborative efforts as Europe’s latest promising House explosion.

In a tough yet melodic outing of rising Progressive House and chugging synth leads, the European trio find themselves well in their element with an intense take on a genre that Le Grand has not only mastered, but set the standard to an all-time-high for. From the subtle melodic stylings right through to its launch into floor fuelled leads, whoever said too many chefs spoils the broth evidently never sampled such poised studio talents as collected in this latest Flamingo outing. In a promising tip to the rising Swedish and German appendages of this latest collaborative, an injection of fresh talent doesn’t seem to have hurt Fedde in his quest to take the globe by storm courtesy of the fresher ranks of his label’s newly orientated family.

Adele Flipped the Bird, Rihanna’s Demure, & Lana Del Ray Wasn’t Creepy – BRIT Awards Roundup!

Adele Flipped the Bird, Rihanna’s Demure, & Lana Del Ray Wasn’t Creepy – BRIT Awards Roundup!

The BRIT Awards took place last night, and all anyone’s talking about is Adele’s middle finger. She really doesn’t seem the sort to flip the bird, does she? But that’s exactly what happened, after the show’s host cut off her acceptance speech when she won for Album of the Year.

Adele’s since explained that the gesture was for “the suits” who were cutting her off, and not towards her fans.

Rihanna won the International Female Solo Artist of the year award – and looked absolutely incredible in her beaded Givenchy dress. This is absolutely my favorite thing RiRi has worn in years.

Lana Del Ray took home the award for International Breakthrough Act. She also really toned down her outfit from her usual ethereal look. This is a much more accessible Lana, don’t you think?
