Lawless stars sparkle in Cannes

Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska brightened Saturday morning in Cannes alongside Lawless costars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Guy Pearce.

Appearing at press photo calls, Chastain was happy to stop for autographs, chatting with LaBeouf as they posed for photos. She slipped into a stunning Gucci gown for the glittering red carpet screening on Saturday night, while Wasikowska chose an elegant plum gown from J. Mendel for the gala premiere of the Prohibition-era crime drama.

Written by musician Nick Cave, Lawless boasts a suitably catchy bluegrass soundtrack. Hardy stars as a Virginia outlaw who peddles moonshine along with his brothers. When sharp-suited Chicago cop Pearce saunters into town demanding a cut of the action, standoffs follow.

Lawless is a very violent, at times disturbing look at an explosive period in American history that's dividing Cannes audiences. You can't argue with the casting, though: Wasikowska puts in a delightful performance as a fresh-faced preacher's daughter while Chastain is as luminous as ever as the stylish city girl who escapes to the country for a bit of peace and quiet (some hope).

Chastain's nude scene may have Cannes abuzz, but her clothed ones are equally memorable—we’re already coveting her 1930s wardrobe of fitted velvet dresses teamed with perfectly-manicured talons.
